The Institute believes in protecting and promoting the interests of the covert professions through standardisation, professionalisation and centralisation. Fully accredited individuals and organisations make a pledge to maintain the ongoing professional standards expected by the public. The rank and status of professional and scholastic association bestowed with registration is an honour made in recognition of professional ability, integrity and competence amongst those who lead their profession in the service of peace and security. The Institute currently admits expert practitioners to the general register in the general field of Intelligence and to the specialist register in the fields of human intelligence (HUMINT), signals intelligence (SIGINT) and cyber.

Please note that applicants seeking entry onto covert operations courses without a current security clearance certificate or waiver from an international authority, may be required to undertake up to six months of intrusive security vetting prior to being admitted to the programme. Therefore, please make sure to provide the Institute with sufficient notice by applying with sufficient lead time from the start date.

COVID-19 Update: Following World Health Organisation guidance all Institute staff are working from home and facilities have been closed. While quarantine remains in place we are working on distance-learning alternatives for new and existing students with video-conferencing substituting attendance lectures and online workshops substituting group activities.
